About me...
I'm Juan Antonio Cervantes and I'm originally from Anthony, NM (which lies between El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM). I'm the oldest of two children from a couple from Durango, Mex. I attended Anthony Elem., Gadsden Jr. High, and Gadsden High. I started in a bilingual program as I did not know English when I started.
I graduated from Dona Ana Branch Community College, and NM State University with an associates in computer technology and a master's in English respectively, as well as my secondary teaching license. I also attended the College of Santa Fe for my bilingual certification and NM Highlands University for my administrative license and my reading certification. I'm currently attending Central NM Community College for my elementary license.
I started teaching in southern NM, first as an adult education teacher for GED, ESL, computers and citizenship, and then as a high school teacher at Las Cruces HS. I was then afforded the chance to work at the NM Department of Education (this was before Gov. Richardson changed it to the PED) as the coordinator for Safe and Drug-Free Schools. However, I found that I needed to work with kids, not laws. I started work in APS at Mary Ann Binford ES as a computer teacher and then Carlos Rey Elementary when I got my bilingual certification. When Tony Hillerman Middle School opened, I was there as a Spanish teacher and then as an instructional coach. I returned to my bilingual education roots when I started at La Luz Elementary in 2014.
Due to the difficulties from the PED and the uncertainty of being a teacher in New Mexico, I began work on my elementary licensure. This year, I will serve as a first grade teacher for that, and next year is another school year.
My Philosophy of Education
I believe that all children can learn and that they want to learn.
